Chapter 2: Kindness and Respect Online

When we talk to friends face-to-face, they can hear our voices and see our expressions. They know if we are joking, being serious, or trying to cheer them up. Online, things are different. People can only see the words we type, not the tone of our voice or the smile on our face. This means our words can be misunderstood, and they can hurt feelings more easily.

That is why kindness and respect are so important when we are online.

The best rule to remember online is the same one we use in real life:

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

If you like it when someone encourages you, then you should encourage others. If you don’t like being teased, then don’t tease other people.

Think of your words as little gifts you give to others. A kind message is like giving someone a smile. A mean message is like handing someone a rock. Which one would you want to receive?

Here are some ways kids show kindness and respect online:

Encouragement in Games: If a teammate misses a point, you can say: “Don’t worry, you’ll get it next time!” instead of “You’re terrible at this.”

Positive Comments: When a classmate shares a drawing, you might type: “That’s really creative!” instead of ignoring it or being negative.

Helping Others: If someone is confused about how to log in, you can politely explain or remind them to ask the teacher.

These small actions make a big difference. They create a space where everyone feels safe, supported, and excited to learn and play.

Respect Respect: Treating people, ideas, and property with care and kindness. online means:

  • Listening (or reading) carefully before responding
  • Not interrupting or typing over someone else in a chat
  • Using polite words like “please,” “thank you,” and “you’re welcome”
  • Avoiding ALL CAPS, which can feel like yelling
  • Not making fun of mistakes — because everyone is still learning

Respect is more than just being polite. It is showing people that their thoughts, feelings, and time matter.

Sometimes, people forget to use netiquette. They might say hurtful things, leave unkind comments, or laugh at others online. This can make people feel left out or sad.

When you see this happen, you have a choice: you can join in, stay silent, or use kindness. Choosing kindness shows courage and makes the online space better for everyone.
