Chapter 1: What Is Netiquette?

When we are in the classroom, we follow rules that help everyone learn and feel comfortable. We raise our hands when we want to speak, so that one person talks at a time. We listen quietly when others are sharing. We use polite words like “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me.”

These rules are not just about being nice — they make sure the classroom is fair, safe, and respectful for everyone. Imagine what would happen if no one followed these rules. Everyone might talk at once, and no one would be able to hear. Students could feel upset if others were rude or unkind. The classroom would not be a very good place to learn.

The internet is a lot like a giant classroom. Instead of just having your classmates in the room, people from all around the world can be there. You can play games, send messages, ask questions, or share your ideas. But there is one big difference: online, we cannot always see the people we are talking to. We can’t see their faces, their smiles, or their feelings.

Because of this, it can be easy to forget that real people are on the other side of the screen. That is why we need rules for how we act online. These rules are called netiquette netiquette: Good manners and kind behavior when using the internet or technology. .

The word netiquette comes from two words put together: “net” (short for internet) and “etiquette” (which means good manners). Netiquette means showing good manners and kindness when we are online.

Think of netiquette as a guide that helps us make smart choices on the internet. Just like stop signs and traffic lights keep drivers safe on the road, netiquette keeps people safe and respectful online. Without it, the internet could feel confusing, noisy, or even hurtful.

Rules are important both in school and online. Without them, things can quickly get messy. Imagine if everyone in the cafeteria shouted at the same time while trying to order lunch. No one would know whose turn it was, and people would feel frustrated. The internet works the same way.

If people are rude, mean, or careless, it stops being fun and helpful. Netiquette makes the internet a better place for everyone. When we use kind words, respect each other’s space, and share fairly, the internet becomes a place where we can learn, play, and connect in positive ways.

Let’s think about some situations:

Good Netiquette: Mia is playing an online math game with her classmates. She types in the chat: “Good job, Alex! You solved that problem really fast.” Alex feels proud and happy.

Bad Netiquette: Instead, what if Mia typed: “You are so slow, Alex.” That would hurt Alex’s feelings and make the game less fun.

Another example: If Emma finds a cool picture online, she could send it to her friends with a message like, “Look at this! Isn’t it awesome?” That shows excitement and respect. But if she took someone else’s picture and said, “I made this,” that would not be honest or respectful.

These little choices show why netiquette matters. The words we choose online are just as important as the words we say out loud.

As we go through this book, you will learn many ways to use netiquette. You will see how it helps when you are playing games, writing emails, watching videos, or even using your iPad for school. Netiquette is about more than just rules — it is about treating people kindly, keeping yourself safe, and making the internet a place where everyone feels welcome.
