Chapter 2: Finding Your Way Around a Device

Don’t Lose Your Work!

Have you ever made something on a computer and then couldn’t find it? That’s the most common tech problem for everyone — and it’s not your fault. Once you know how a device is organized, you’ll never lose your work again.

Every device runs an operating systemoperating system: The main software that runs a device and lets you use apps, files, and settings. Examples are Windows, Mac, and iPad. — the main software that runs everything. Common ones are Windows (many laptops), Mac (Apple computers), and iPadOS (iPads). They look a little different, but they all let you open apps, search, and change settings.

A filefile: One thing you save, like a picture, a story, or a drawing. is one thing you save — a story, a picture, a drawing. A folderfolder: A container that holds files to keep them neat, like a folder in your backpack. holds files to keep them neat, just like a folder in your backpack.

The most important rule: save your work with a good name in a good spot. A file called “Untitled” is easy to lose. A file called “My-Dog-Story” in a “Writing” folder is easy to find!

Your files can be saved in the cloudcloud: A place on the internet, like Google Drive or iCloud, where your files are kept safe and you can open them on any device. — on the internet — using something like Google Drive or iCloud. That way, your work is safe even if a device breaks, and you can open it on any device. This is why saving to the cloud is so helpful!

Settings is where you change how a device works — the sound, the screen, and more. One important habit: let a device do its updates. Updates fix problems and keep the device safe, kind of like a check-up at the doctor.
