Chapter 1: Meet Your Devices
Meet Your Devices 💻
Section titled “Meet Your Devices 💻”Hello, Technology Friends!
You already use technology! Maybe you watch shows on a tablet. Maybe you play a game on a phone. Maybe you have seen a grown-up type on a computer.
Tapping a screen is easy. But do you know what is really happening inside? In this book, we will find out. Learning the names and parts of our devices is the first step to being a great tech helper!
What Is a Device? 📱
Section titled “What Is a Device? 📱”A devicedevice: A machine like a tablet, computer, or phone that helps us learn and play. is a machine that helps us learn and play. Here are some devices you might know:
- A tablet is flat like a book. You touch the screen with your finger.
- A laptop is a computer that folds open and closed. It has a keyboard.
- A desktop is a computer that stays on a desk. It has a big screen.
- A phone is small and fits in a pocket. It can make calls, and it is a computer too!
Here is a secret: all of these are computers. A phone is a tiny computer. A tablet is a flat computer. They look different, but inside they do the same job.
Hidden Computers
Section titled “Hidden Computers”Some computers hide inside other things!
- A smart speaker is a computer that listens for your voice and talks back.
- A TV that plays shows from the internet has a computer inside.
- A game console is a computer made just for games.
- Some toys have tiny computers that make them beep and talk.
A computer is not magic. It is a machine that follows instructions. When you tap a picture, you are giving it an instruction. You are saying, “Open this, please!” The device listens and does it.
Touch or Click? 👆
Section titled “Touch or Click? 👆”Some devices have a touchscreentouchscreen: A screen you touch with your finger to make things happen. — you touch the screen with your finger to make things happen. Your finger can do different moves:
- Tap — touch once, quick and light. This opens things.
- Swipe — slide your finger across the screen. This moves to the next page.
- Scroll — slide your finger up or down. This moves a long page so you can see more.
- Pinch — put two fingers on the screen and spread them apart. This makes a picture bigger!
Other devices use a mouse — a little tool you slide with your hand. When you move the mouse, a small arrow on the screen moves too. That arrow is called the pointer. Move the pointer to a picture, then press the mouse button. That is a click! A laptop has a flat square called a touchpad. You slide your finger on it to move the pointer, just like a mouse.
Touching and clicking do the same thing. They both tell the device what you want.
The Parts We Can See 🔩
Section titled “The Parts We Can See 🔩”Let’s name the parts we can touch. Every part has a job:
- The screen shows us pictures and words. It is how the device shows you things.
- The keyboard has buttons with letters. We press the letters to type.
- The camera is a tiny dot. It takes pictures and lets people see us on a call.
- The microphone is a tiny hole that hears your voice.
- The speaker makes the sound. That is where music and voices come out.
- The buttons on the side turn the device on and make the sound louder or softer.
- The charging port is a little slot where the charger plugs in.
Here is an easy way to remember: some parts listen to you, and some parts talk to you. The keyboard, the camera, and the microphone listen. The screen and the speaker talk. A touchscreen does both!
Turning On, Charging, and Being Gentle 🔑
Section titled “Turning On, Charging, and Being Gentle 🔑”A grown-up helps us turn on a device with the power button. Then we log in — that means showing the device it’s really us. Sometimes we type a secret word. Sometimes the device looks at our face. Logging in keeps our things safe.
Devices need power, just like you need food. A device has a battery inside. When the battery gets low, the device gets sleepy and may show a little empty battery picture. Then a grown-up plugs in the charger to fill it back up.
When we are done, we can put the device to sleep by pressing the power button. The screen turns dark and rests, but it is ready to wake up fast.
Gentle Hands
Section titled “Gentle Hands”Devices are special tools, not toys to throw. Here are the gentle rules:
- Use clean, dry hands. Keep drinks and snacks away.
- Carry a tablet with two hands.
- Tap softly. You never need to push hard.
- Keep the camera and microphone clear so they can see and hear.
- Always ask first before touching someone else’s device.
Chapter 1 Activity: Point and Name 🔍
Section titled “Chapter 1 Activity: Point and Name 🔍”With a grown-up:
- Find a device you use. Point to the screen, a button, the camera, and the charging port.
- Say if you touch the screen or use a mouse.
- Try a tap, a swipe, and a pinch. What happened each time?
- Find one hidden computer in your home. What does it do?
- Draw your favorite device and color it!
