When you live in a town or city, you are called a citizen. Citizens follow rules, help their community, and show respect to others. The internet is like a giant online community. When you use it, you are a digital citizen digital citizen: A person who uses technology safely, kindly, and responsibly while respecting others online. .

A responsible digital citizen makes choices that are safe, kind, and helpful for everyone online.

Technology is fun, but being a responsible digital citizen also means knowing when to take a break. Spending too much time online can make us tired or cranky. Playing outside, reading, and spending time with friends and family are just as important as screen time.

Balance Balance: Using both online and offline time in a healthy way. helps us stay healthy and happy.

When you use someone else’s work — like a picture, story, or video — you need to give them credit credit: Saying who created the work you are sharing or using. . That means saying where it came from or who made it. Copying someone else’s work and pretending it’s yours is unfair.

Good digital citizens are honest and respectful about giving credit.

Responsible: “I found this picture on NASA’s website.”

Not Responsible: Using the picture and saying, “I made this.”

The internet can be used to learn, create, and share positive things. You can:

  • Write encouraging messages to friends
  • Share interesting facts you’ve learned
  • Post about things that make people smile

When you use technology for good, you help make the online world a better place for everyone.

Everything we’ve learned about netiquette comes down to one simple rule:

Treat others online the way you want to be treated.

If you want people to be kind, respectful, safe, and honest with you, then you must do the same for them. This is the heart of being a responsible digital citizen.
